Family Counseling

The family is viewed as a unique social system, complete with roles, identities, power-authority, birth order, and extended members, such as grandparents.  It recognizes the parts (i.e., individual personalities), but the emphasis is on the whole (i.e., how members function in a system).

Clients typically seek Family counseling due to intrafamily conflicts, emotional cut-off, emotional projection, multi-generational transmission, societal emotional process, substance abuse-addictions, mental illness, major life events, financial issues, and school issues. Other reasons to seek family counseling are the psychosocial challenges of creating a blended family.  Blended family is defined as:

  • A step family, blended family, or bonus family is a family where at least one parent has children that are not genetically related to the other spouse or partner. Either one parent may have children from a previous relationship

Clients can expect the following environment and experience:

Parenting Counseling

Whether you are co-parenting or parenting solo, it is considered one the toughest, yet most rewarding jobs in the world.  It is a 24/7 job that can be overwhelming, leading to chronic stress, dysfunction, and poor mind-body-spirit health.  Typically, issues stem from generational patterns, limited resources, and a dysfunctional value system, or lack of.  They also frequently occur due to parenting style conflicts (i.e., authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, neglectful).  Add in the messiness of life, or a child with special needs, and you may quickly find yourself in need of help.

We see parent counseling as a hybrid therapy, which includes a mix of our chosen therapeutic models and life 101 coaching.  We also believe the most successful parent counselors are those who are willing to get in the game with you.  In other words, we have had great success entering a family system, such as your home.  This allows us to be in the moment so we can mediate, advocate, and teach-coach.  It is a powerful experience that should not be overlooked.  Clients can expect the following environment and experience:

- Learn powerful positive vs. negative behaviorism
- Identify and commit to parenting style/plan
- Develop family values and boundaries
- Create structure, routine, and learn negotiating skills
- Reduce conflict and develop emotional regulation skills
- Create adaptive strategies and build inner resilience.
- Gain greater life meaning, purpose, and fulfillment
