Fort Collins Mental Health Counselor and Life Coach: Verbal Active Listening

Today's Blog Post

  • Reflect: In your own words, paraphrase what the other person said
  • Be curious (e.g., ooh, that sounds interesting, can you tell me more about that)
  • Ask open ended questions (i.e., not yes or no questions)
  • Praise: Offer gratitude and appreciation (i.e., positive reinforcement)
  • Validate: Reinforce their thoughts and emotions
  • Utterances: Use simple sounds to encourage them to continue (e.g., uh-huh, yup, okay)
  • Use the speakers name

Our counseling-coaching approach combines brain and heart listening skills.
