Fort Collins Mental Health Counselor and Life Coach: Habits

Today's Blog Post

We all have habits, e.g. cognitive, emotional, communication, physical, dietary, financial, etc.  Habits can be viewed as 1) normal, 2) abusive, and 3) addictive.  A normal habit is a glass of wine with dinner (i.e., everything in moderation).  An abusive habit is on/off excessiveness, e.g. a bottle of wine with dinner, or obsessive negative thoughts (a.k.a rumination).  Addictive habits (substance or other) are chronic physiological and psychological compulsions, that rob you of your identity, control your life, and bring severe harm to yourself and others.  To change numbers two and three, science supports the following:

- Change the reward system and be consistent.
- Change your environment (try something new)
- Make it harder to achieve a bad habit
- Make it easier to achieve a good habit
- Focus on the cause, not the symptom

Would you like to change a habit, e.g. consuming less drugs/alcohol, or improved communication with your spouse, family, or friends?
